SIU Terminates Investigation into London Arrest of Man Operating E-bike
Le directeur de l’Unité des enquêtes spéciales, Tony Loparco, a mis fin à une enquête sur une interaction survenue en février 2018 entre un homme de 47 ans et un agent de police de London. L’UES a été avisée de l’incident par l’homme le 8 mars 2018.
Le 27 février 2018, vers 2 h 30 du matin, un agent du Service de police de London a fait signe de s’arrêter à un cycliste qui roulait sur un vélo électrique, dans le secteur des rues King et Burwell. Il y a eu une interaction entre l’agent et l’homme, et ce dernier a été placé en état d’arrestation. Malgré deux visites à l’hôpital, aucune blessure grave ne lui a été diagnostiquée.
Le directeur Loparco a déclaré : « La preuve médicale établit que l’homme n’a pas subi de blessure grave. J’ai donc mis fin à l’enquête sur cet incident. »
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
