SIU Investigating Police-Involved Shooting in Camden East

Mississauga, ON (6 May, 2025) ---
In the late afternoon of January 17, 2025, OPP officers were dispatched to a house in Camden East. An individual had contacted police to report that a man had threatened him with a knife. An officer knocked on a door and observed the man inside. The man held a knife in each hand and told the officers they were not allowed inside.  The officers retreated. Over the course of the next hour or so, the man steadfastly refused to disarm himself and surrender to police. Some time later, the man exited the house and walked forward in the direction of the officers. He was still in possession of the knives. He was met by a series of firearm discharges. Two officers had each fired their ARWENS three times, as one officer fired his semi-automatic pistol twice. The man was struck. He was taken into custody and first-aid was rendered. At hospital, the 41-year-old man was treated for bullet wounds to his left torso and left leg. On his assessment of the evidence, SIU Director Joseph Martino determined there were no reasonable grounds to believe that an officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the shooting.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
