SIU Concludes Investigation into Man’s Broken Rib in Brampton Arrest

Case Number: 26-OCI-039

Mississauga, ON (18 May, 2026) ---
The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, found no reasonable grounds to believe a Peel Regional Police officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the broken left rib suffered by a 44-year-old man during his arrest. On January 21, 2026, the man, believed to have been a suspended driver, fled a police traffic stop on Sandalwood Parkway. He lost control and struck several parked cars, then fled on foot. He was arrested at a residence on Sandalwood Parkway East and Richvale Drive.

Director Martino found the officer used only reasonable force during the arrest, including a takedown and two knee strikes. He concluded the force made sense as the man fled police and during his arrest, he failed to release his arms to be handcuffed and bit an officer.

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
