SIU Concludes Investigation into Motorcyclist’s Injury in Fort Erie Collision
Case Number: 25-OVI-255
The Special Investigations Unit found no reasonable grounds to believe a Niagara Regional Police Service officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the fractured right clavicle suffered by a 27-year-old man when he crashed his dirt bike. As the motorcyclist was briefly followed by an officer prior to the crash, the SIU was notified and investigated.
In the early morning of June 29, 2025, police received a call about an impaired driver riding a motorcycle. The officer observed the motorcyclist and turned his emergency lights on to signal the driver to pull over. The man took off west on Garrison Road and then south on King Street. The officer followed for a brief period at moderate speeds but promptly discontinued on King Street when it became clear that the rider would not stop. Director Joseph Martino concluded the officer was well back of the motorcycle when the man lost control and crashed. On this record, there was no suggestion of any want of care on the part of the officer in relation to the collision.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
