SIU Investigating After Man Fatally Shot at Toronto Pearson Airport

Mississauga, ON (24 April, 2025) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after Peel Regional Police officers fatally shot a 30-year-old man this morning at Toronto Pearson Airport.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • Shortly before 7 a.m., Peel Regional Police officers were investigating a man in distress in an SUV at Terminal 1 departures.
  • Officers located the man and early information received indicates he produced a firearm.
  • Two officers discharged their firearms at the man. The man was was pronounced deceased at the scene this morning.
  • No police officers were injured and there is no known threat to the public.
Six investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
