SIU Investigating After Officer in North York Discharges Firearm

Mississauga, ON (25 October, 2025) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the discharge of a police firearm this morning in North York.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 6 a.m. on October 25, 2025, Toronto Police Service officers were dispatched to a North York residence in the area of Victoria Park Avenue and Lynvalley Crescent for an ‘unknown trouble’ call. Upon arrival, officers determined that a man had injured two family members.
  • Inside the residence, officers located the man. He was in possession of edged weapons.
  • An interaction ensued, and one officer discharged his conducted energy weapon and another officer discharged his firearm.
  • The man was not struck by the firearm discharge, and did not suffer any serious injury.
  • The man was arrested.

Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
