SIU Investigating After Youths Injured in Collision in Oshawa While Fleeing Police

Mississauga, ON (13 August, 2024) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after two youths were seriously injured when a driver fled a traffic stop and collided with an SUV in Oshawa last night.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 10:30 p.m. on August 12, 2024, a Durham Regional Police Service officer attempted to stop the driver of a BMW for speeding on Thornton Road North in Whitby.
  • The driver fled and collided with a Nissan Rogue at Winchester Road West in Oshawa. The driver of the BMW ran away from the scene. Four passengers remained in the vehicle. 
  • Paramedics were called to the scene.
  • Two of the passengers, ages 17 and 13 years old, were taken to Sick Kids in Toronto for treatment of serious injuries. Two other passengers were taken to hospital and were not seriously injured.
  • The 16-year-old driver of the BMW was apprehended with the assistance of a police service dog. He was taken to hospital in Oshawa. He was not seriously injured.
  • Two female occupants of the Rogue were not seriously injured.
Two investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case. One subject official and three witness officials have been designated at this time.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
