SIU Investigating Collision Involving Sudbury Police Cruiser and Cyclist

Mississauga, ON (20 October, 2025) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating a collision involving a Greater Sudbury Police Service officer and a 75-year-old cyclist on Saturday. The cyclist was seriously injured.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 8:50 a.m. on October 18, 2025, there was a collision involving an officer driving a marked cruiser and a male cyclist at the intersection of Lorne Street and Regent Street in Greater Sudbury. The collision occurred when the officer was en route to a call. 
  • Paramedics were called to the scene and transported the man who was riding the bicycle to hospital where he was treated for a serious, non-life-threatening injury.
Two investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case. One subject official has been designated at this time.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
