SIU Investigating Fatal Shooting of Man in Niagara Falls

Mississauga, ON (22 October, 2025) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a 38-year-old man was fatally shot by a Niagara Regional Police Service officer in Niagara Falls early this morning.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At about 2:30 a.m., on October 22, 2025, the man, who was the subject of an Amber Alert and sought for a homicide in Brampton, was located by tactical unit officers at the Gales Gas Bar in the area of Thorold Stone Road and Montrose Road.
  • There was an interaction with the man and officers. An officer shot the man. Paramedics responded. The man was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Five investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. The post-mortem is scheduled for tomorrow (October 23, 2025).

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
