SIU Investigating Man’s Fatal Fall from Toronto Apartment Balcony

Mississauga, ON (1 May, 2026) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 52-year-old man today in Toronto.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At approximately 11 a.m. on May 1, 2026, the Toronto Police Service received a 911 call regarding a stabbing incident at an apartment building in the area of Bleecker Street and St. James Avenue.
  • Officers located a male who had been stabbed and commenced first aid while waiting for paramedics.
  • Officers also knocked on the door of an apartment unit, and through the door, had a conversation with a man. 
  • A short time later, officers learned that the man had fallen from a balcony to the ground below. First aid was administered, but the man succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
