Mississauga, ON (17 July, 2026) ---
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating a two-vehicle collision in Hamilton that resulted in the serious injuries of two people this morning. As Hamilton Police Service officers attempted to stop the driver of one of the vehicles prior to the collision, the SIU was notified and invoked its mandate.

Preliminary information suggests at about 6:20 a.m. on July 17, 2026, officers attempted to stop the driver of a Dodge Challenger. The male driver fled. The car was involved in a collision with an SUV at King Street East and Balsam Street. The female driver, age 61, of the SUV and the male driver, age 44, of the car were both taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment of serious injuries. The man and woman are in stable condition in hospital.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at: https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php.

All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
