SIU Charges York Regional Police Officer with Sexual Assault

Case Number: 24-OSA-056

Mississauga, ON (13 August, 2025) ---
The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, has reasonable grounds to believe a York Regional Police officer committed criminal offences in December of 2023.

On February 7, 2024, the SIU was notified by the police service of the alleged offences that reportedly occurred in Vaughan in December 2023. The Unit launched an investigation.

As a result of the SIU investigation, a male York Regional Police officer is facing the following charges under the Criminal Code
  • One count of sexual assault contrary to section 271; and
  • One count of breach of trust, contrary to section 122.

The officer’s first court appearance was before the Ontario Court of Justice at 50 Eagle Street, Newmarket, on June 24, 2025.  His next court appearance is scheduled at the same courthouse on September 16, 2025.

The SIU delayed this news release announcing the charges against the officer because of concerns raised about the potential impact on the complainant’s mental health caused by public disclosure of the charges.  Pursuant to section 33(2) of the Special Investigations Unit Act, 2019, the SIU is also omitting the official’s name from this public notice because of concerns that disclosure of the name may result in the identification of the complainant.

As the matter is before the courts, and in consideration of the fair trial interests of the accused, the SIU will not provide further comment on the investigation.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
