SIU Concludes Investigation into Fatal Police-Involved Shooting in Markham

Case Number: 25-OFD-237

Mississauga, ON (8 October, 2025) ---
In the early morning of June 11, 2025, York Regional Police officers attended a condominium complex in Markham to investigate a report of a disturbance coming from a unit. Upon arriving at the unit, an officer knocked on the door several times, identified himself and fellow officers as the ‘police’, and asked the occupants to open the door. They heard concerning sounds coming from inside. A security guard from the building unlocked the door. Soon after entering, the officers observed a woman lying facedown on a massage table. She appeared uninjured and motioned with her arms. Within moments, a man appeared from a bedroom and advanced quickly on the woman, stabbing her multiple times. The man was ordered to stop what he was doing, but continued to stab the woman. An officer fired his semi-automatic firearm once, striking the man in the head. The man succumbed to his injuries. The woman was transported to hospital and treated for her stab wounds. On his assessment of the evidence, SIU Director Joseph Martino determined there were no reasonable grounds to believe that an officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the man’s death.
