SIU Investigating After Man Fatally Shot in Welland

Mississauga, ON (14 December, 2025) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating after Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) officers fatally shot a 26-year-old man in Welland last night.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At about 9:15 p.m. on December 13, 2025, tactical members of the NRPS responded to a residence in the area of Ontario Road and King Street to assist in the arrest of a man wanted by Peel Regional Police. 
  • The man discharged a firearm at police and officers returned fire. Officers deployed gas into the home and the man exited. There was further exchange of gunfire and the man was struck. EMS provided medical care and the man was pronounced deceased at the scene outside.
  • One officer was struck by gunfire, taken to hospital and released.
Four investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. The post-mortem is scheduled for tomorrow morning (December 15).

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
