SIU Discontinues Cambridge Collision Investigation

Case Number: 26-PVI-229

Mississauga, ON (21 October, 2026) ---
The Deputy Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Stacey O’Brien, has terminated an investigation into a collision that occurred in May in Cambridge.

On the night of May 22, 2026, an OPP officer was parked on the shoulder of Highway 401 westbound near Regional Road 35 in Cambridge when his Automated Licence Plate Recognition system identified a passing Mercedes-Benz as being stolen. The officer followed the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop after the vehicle entered the westbound Cambridge ONroute service centre. However, the driver accelerated away and continued to drive erratically while evading police. The driver managed to maneuver around a spike belt and entered Highway 401 westbound. Shortly after, it collided with a westbound Nissan Rogue, causing that vehicle to roll over. A 37-year-old female passenger in the Rogue was transported to hospital. The Mercedes-Benz was brought to a stop, and its occupants were arrested.

Based on the SIU’s preliminary inquiries, which included a review of video footage that captured the incident in parts, Deputy Director O’Brien was satisfied that the investigation should be discontinued. CT and MRI imaging of the woman from the Rogue identified several subtle cervical and upper thoracic ligament sprains, as well as a small disc protrusion. No acute traumatic injuries or fractures were identified. There being no indication of any ‘serious injury’ within the mandate of the SIU, the unit was without jurisdiction to investigate the incident. The file has been closed.

All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
