SIU Seeking Public Assistance in Identifying Man Shot by Toronto Police in June

Mississauga, ON (13 July, 2016) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a man who was fatally shot along a rail corridor in west Toronto in June.

On June 17, 2016, a number of Toronto Police Service officers, including Emergency Task Force officers, attended a rail corridor located between Weston Road and Highway 400, south of Sheppard Avenue West.  There was a confrontation with a man, and the man was shot.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.
    
As of this time, the SIU has been unable to identify the man.  The Unit is asking the public to review the following images and reported aliases and contact the lead investigator with any information pertaining to the man’s identity.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
