SIU Updates Oakville Shooting Investigation
SIU Concludes Investigation into
At approximately 1:34 a.m. this morning, the HRPS received a 911 call about a man who was behaving strangely and possibly armed with a gun at a Tim Hortons coffee shop on Trafalgar Road in Oakville. Officers responded and found the man had left in a car. The police gathered information about the car and the license plate and started to investigate.
Two officers saw the car at Cairncroft and Lakeshore Roads and started to follow it. Additional officers joined in and followed the car to a park off Weaver Avenue. The man got out of the car and was involved in a confrontation with the officers. At approximately 2:33 a.m., shots were fired by the police and the man was struck. He suffered fatal wounds and died at the scene.
The man's identity is not confirmed at this time.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
