SIU Appeals for Witnesses to Collision in Niagara Falls
SIU Completes Investigation into Collision in Niagara Falls
The WRPS advised the SIU that at 9:38 p.m., Tuesday November 20, 2007, two uniformed officers responded to a report of a robbery at the Shopper's Drug Mart on Ottawa St. When the officers arrived they became involved in an altercation with a male. One of the officers discharged their service pistol, which resulted in the male being shot.
EMS responded to the scene and the male was taken to hospital by ambulance where he later succumbed to his injuries.
This investigation is in its preliminary stages, therefore there is no additional information available at this time.
The SIU has assigned five field investigators and three forensic identification technicians to investigate the circumstances of this incident.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
