SIU Investigating Death of Man in Toronto Who Fell from Highway 401
No Basis to Lay Charges in Relation to Man’s Fatal Fall from Highway 401 Overpass to Don Valley Golf Course
- Le 18 septembre 2018, juste avant 2 heures du matin, le 9-1-1 a reçu plusieurs appels signalant qu’un homme marchait vers l’est dans les voies collectrices de l’autoroute 401 Est, entre Avenue Road et la rue Yonge.
- Un agent de la Police provinciale de l’Ontario a repéré l’homme et a commencé à lui parler.
- L’homme s’est enfui en courant vers le nord et a traversé les quatre voies de circulation. Les voies collectrices et les voies express de l’autoroute 401 sont séparées par un espace ouvert. L’homme est tombé au travers de cet espace.
- Des agents de la Police provinciale, du Service de police de Toronto et des Services médicaux d’urgence sont arrivés sur les lieux et ont prodigué les premiers soins à l’homme.
- Le décès de l’homme a été prononcé sur place à 4 h 55.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
