SIU Investigates (Custody Death, Norfolk)

TORONTO (23 June, 2008) --- The Special Investigations Unit has sent four investigators and two forensic investigators to Norfolk to probe the circumstances of the arrest of a 36 year old man by members of the Ontario Provincial Police.

On Monday, June 23rd, 2008 at approximately 10:30 AM police responded to a report of an unwanted guest on Front Road in Norfolk. During the arrest an officer deployed a Taser and the man was taken into custody. The man was then taken to the Simcoe OPP Detachment for further investigation where he went into medical distress. EMS responded and he was taken to Norfolk General Hospital. He was later pronounced dead.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
