SIU Appeals for Witnesses to a Shooting in Brampton

Case Number: 08-OFI-087

TORONTO (4 June, 2008) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is continuing its appeal for witnesses who may be able to assist with the probe into a shooting involving officers of the Peel Regional Police on Sunday May 25, 2008.

SIU investigators would like to speak to two men riding their bicycles on Bovaird Drive near Highway 10 and a man, who drove his pick-up truck - possibly brown in colour - into the parking lot of a plaza at 170 Bovaird at approximately 7:40 a.m. just shortly before a man was shot by police in the plaza.

The wounded man has been identified as 23-year-old Roy Rousseau.

The three members of the public as well as anyone else, who may have seen or heard anything with regard to this incident, are asked to call the SIU at 416-622-1965 or 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
