SIU Appeals for Witnesses to a Shooting in Brampton
At approximately 8.a.m. this morning, uniformed officers were conducting an investigation into stolen vehicles in the area of Bovaird Drive and Highway 10 when they spotted a stolen SUV in the parking lot of a motel. When they attempted to question a man at one of the rooms, he fled on foot through fields and into a nearby industrial site about half a kilometre away.
At that location, there was an exchange of gunfire and the man was shot and wounded. The officers were not hurt. The 23-year-old suspect is in Sunnybrook Medical Health Sciences Centre in stable condition after being treated for wounds to his chest and leg.
The SIU has assigned six investigators to this case; four of them are forensic investigators. One Peel Regional Police officer has been designated as a subject officer and four others as witness officers.
The SIU is appealing for witnesses: anyone with information is asked to call the SIU at
1-800-787-8529 or 416-622-1965.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
