No Charges to Issue in Relation to Woman’s Arrest in Acton

Mississauga, ON (19 November, 2020) ---
On January 2, 2020, a 60-year-old woman was arrested inside her home in Acton by Halton Regional Police Service officers. She subsequently underwent surgery in hospital for tears to her shoulder tendons. The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, has determined there are no reasonable grounds to believe that any of the arresting officers committed a criminal offence in connection with the woman’s arrest and injuries.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or an allegation of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of investigations to the Attorney General.
