SIU Continues Investigation into Firearm Death in Lindsay

Mississauga (23 June, 2011) --- The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is continuing its investigation into the death of a man in Lindsay yesterday.

The SIU has assigned eight investigators and four forensic investigators to the investigation.

SIU investigators are in the area doing a canvass to locate and interview any civilian witnesses. SIU forensic investigators are at a home on Georgian Street processing the scene and gathering evidence.

At this time the SIU has designated six officers from the Kawartha Lakes Police Service (KLPS) and two officers from the Peterborough Lakefield Police Service (PLPS) as witness officers. Four officers from the PLPS have been designated as subject officers.

A post mortem examination was conducted today at 9:30 a.m. in Toronto on the 21-year-old male. The name of the deceased will not be released at this time pending notification of next-of-kin.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
