SIU Continues Investigation into Fatal Collision in Morrisburg

Mississauga (2 August, 2011) ---  

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is continuing its investigation into the death of a Williamsburg woman early Sunday morning outside Morrisburg.

Judith Fleury, 52-years-old of Williamsburg was driving a vehicle that was involved in a collision with an OPP vehicle. Both vehicles left the roadway and Ms. Fleury’s vehicle struck a pole. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Two males and one female who were passengers in the Fleury vehicle sustained injuries. The males were taken to Ottawa Civic Hospital for treatment. The female was taken to hospital in Winchester.

The SIU assigned two investigators and three forensic investigators to investigate this incident. One officer has been designated as a subject officer and six officers have been designated as witness officers.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
