Update: SIU Releases Name of Man Injured in Huron East Encounter

Mississauga (9 March, 2010) --- Ontario's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is continuing to probe the circumstances surrounding the injuries sustained by 70-year-old Fred Preston of Burk's Falls. He was wounded yesterday during an interaction with two officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) that involved an exchange of gunfire.

The OPP reported to the SIU that officers became involved in a confrontation with Mr. Preston the morning of March 8, 2010 at 82352 North Line in Huron County. Mr. Preston was shot, and remains at the Victoria Hospital in London in critical condition.

Six investigators and three forensic investigators are investigating this incident. A number of civillian interviews have been conducted, and three witness officers and one subject officer have been designated. The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or an allegation of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
  • report the results of investigations to the Attorney General.
