SIU Investigating Collision After Man Fled Police in Peterborough Area

Mississauga, ON (25 September, 2026) ---
In the morning of June 5, 2026, a Peterborough Police Service officer was on the lookout for a vehicle following calls to police of erratic driving. The officer located the vehicle on County Road 10, closed the distance behind the vehicle and activated his cruiser’s siren. The driver pulled over and momentarily came to a stop before accelerating away. The officer followed for a short distance before bringing his cruiser to a stop. Approaching the roadway’s overpass at Highway 115, the driver drove onto the southbound lane and struck a flatbed trailer being towed by a pick-up truck. He continued north a short distance and collided head-on with another southbound pick-up truck. The 23-year-old driver was extracted by fire services personnel and transported to hospital for treatment of multiple fractures. On his assessment of the evidence, SIU Director Joseph Martino determined there were no reasonable grounds to believe that an officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the collision.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (municipal, regional and provincial police officers, police officers with the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
