SIU Updates Investigation into Fatal Shooting in Toronto

Case Number: 07-TFD-057

TORONTO (29 March, 2007) --- Investigators from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are continuing their probe into a fatal shooting at an apartment building at 3460 Keele St. involving officers from the Toronto Police Service (TPS) on March 28, 2007.

TPS officers were called to the building in response to a domestic disturbance involving two people who were visiting tenants of the building. Officers became involved in a confrontation with a man, resulting in one shot being fired by one officer. The man was hit and was pronounced dead at hospital. He is identified as 37-year-old Cristian Iordache, a resident of Windsor.

A post mortem examination was conducted today on the body of Mr. Iordache in Toronto. The results are not being released at this point in the investigation.

Mr. Iordache's spouse, who was injured during the course of a struggle with her husband during this incident, was treated for those injuries at hospital and has subsequently been released.

SIU investigators are continuing to hold the scene in order to conduct forensic examinations. Investigators will continue to interview witnesses and have now designated one subject officer and nine witness officers from the TPS.

The investigation is actively continuing. No further details will be released on this investigation today.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
