The SIU was notified that TPS officers were called to the apartment building in response to a domestic dispute. Officers arrived at the apartment and became involved in a confrontation with a man, resulting in the man being fatally shot. The man's identity is not being released as his next of kin have not been notified.
A post mortem examination will be conducted on March 29.
During the incident, the man's spouse was also injured. She is currently being treated in hospital. The two were visiting the apartment in which the incident occurred and were not tenants.
SIU investigators are independently examining the circumstances of the police shooting. As part of the SIU probe, investigators have designated one subject officer and seven witness officers from the TPS. Interviews with police and civilian witnesses are ongoing and the scene continues to be processed by the SIU. Additionally, the involved officer's firearm has been seized for examination.
No further information will be released on this investigation today in order to protect the integrity of the SIU's investigation.

- depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
- publicly report the results of its investigations
