TORONTO (28 March, 2007) --- Eight investigators including three forensic identification technicians from the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) are probing the circumstances of a shooting that occurred involving the Toronto Police Service (TPS).

The SIU was notified that at about 8:46 a.m. today, TPS officers were called to an apartment building at 3460 Keele St. in response to a domestic dispute during which a female in an apartment was injured. Officers arrived and became involved in a confrontation with a man, resulting in the man being fatally shot. The man's identity is not being released pending notification of next of kin.

SIU investigators are examining the circumstances of the police shooting. As part of the SIU probe, investigators will be processing the scene, canvassing the apartment building, interviewing police and civilian witnesses and making officer designations.

No further details are available at this point in the investigation. The lead investigator will be making another statement at the scene at 3:00 p.m. today.

  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
