SIU Investigating Fatal Incident in Brampton

Mississauga, ON (30 May, 2019) ---
The Interim Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, has terminated an investigation into the death of a man earlier this month in Brampton.

On the night of May 1, 2019, a 12-year-old injured boy went to a neighbor’s home and informed that there had been a domestic situation involving his mother and father. The homeowner contacted 911, and as a result, Peel Regional Police officers responded to a home on Quarry Edge Drive. Upon entering the residence, officers located a 47-year-old man lying on the floor of the main floor bathroom. He had stab wounds to the neck and was doused in gasoline. He was arrested. The officers applied emergency first aid, and when the man stopped breathing, CPR was administered. When paramedics and firefighters arrived, they took over care of the man. Despite their efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 41-year-old woman who was found on the second floor of the home was transported to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre where she was pronounced dead.

The 12-year-old boy was taken to hospital for treatment of stab wounds. His 3-year-old sister had been able to get out of the home unharmed.

Interim Director Martino said, “Based on the foregoing record, as established by the SIU’s preliminary inquiries, it is evident that no police officer caused or contributed to the man’s death. Accordingly, the SIU’s investigation is hereby discontinued and the file closed.”

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
