Update: SIU Investigating Death of Man in Norfolk County

Mississauga, ON (4 November, 2021) ---
The province’s Special Investigations Unit continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a 70-year-old man after a Toronto Police Service officer discharged his firearm near a residence in Norfolk County yesterday afternoon.

Preliminary information suggests the following:
  • At about 12:04 p.m., on November 3, 2021, Toronto Police Service officers executed a search warrant at a residence in the area of Highway 6 and Highway 24. 
  • In the course of an interaction, an officer discharged his firearm.
  • One man is deceased.

One subject official and three witness officials have been designated.

The post-mortem was conducted this morning.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials (police officers as well as special constables with the Niagara Parks Commission and peace officers with the Legislative Protective Service) that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person. All investigations are conducted by SIU investigators who are civilians. Under the Special Investigations Unit Act, the Director of the SIU must

  • consider whether the official has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
  • depending on the evidence, cause a criminal charge to be laid against the official where grounds exist for doing so, or close the file without any charges being laid
  • publicly report the results of its investigations
